a photographic exploration…
Kew Gardens is an iconic garden that is known throughout the world. It is visited by many thousands of people from every corner of the globe, each year.
Despite this there are many aspects of Kew Gardens that few seldom capture or pause to observe.
Visitors rush past the tiny toadstools thriving in the undergrowth and the frozen leaves in the bed of clematis in winter.
The installation known as The Hive is rarely viewed through barren trees in the winter, placing this work, where art meets nature, in a fitting context.
Visitors pause by the lake in front of the palm house in order to snap an obligatory “selfie” and then walk on by, failing to pause and wonder at the grandeur of the building of the Victorian designer Decimus Burton and the extreme skill of the engineer, Richard Turner, who brought it into being.
Few have heard of the painter Marianne North, the Mozart of Botanical Art, yet a gallery of work by this amazingly talented independent Victorian woman lies within the grounds of Kew Gardens.
The tiny alpine plants of the Rock Garden is perhaps one of the least visited attractions of Kew Gardens yet, the tiny plants that live and thrive here are some of the most tenacious and hardy in the grounds gaining life giving nutrients from seemingly impossible cracks and crevices.
